Leg pain, aching or cramping
Burning or itching of the skin
Leg or ankle swelling
"Heavy" feeling in legs
Skin discolouration or texture changes
Open wounds or sores

4. Has anyone in your blood related family been diagnosed with varicose veins?

5. Has anyone in your blood related family had vein surgery or injections?

What is Superficial Venous Reflux?
In healthy veins, the normal direction of blood flow is upward towards the heart. There are delicate folds of the lining of the veins called "valves" which close and prevent downward flow back towards the feet. If the valves in the veins under the skin are not functioning properly, the blood flows backwards and is said to "reflux".This condition in the superficial veins just under the skin is called "Superficial Venous Reflux" or SVR for short.

SVR can lead to ache, swelling, itch and a feeling of "heaviness". Over time, the downflow and back pressure can lead to varicose veins.

Should I have treatment?

In some cases, superficial venous reflux causes very little in the way of symptoms and no treatment other than compression hosiery is needed. However, reflux tends to get worse with time and treatment can prevent complications such as eczema, phlebitis and ulcers.
