Self Help

Vein problems are very common and if members of your family have varicose veins, you may be at risk of developing them yourself. There are things you can do to minimise your risk and to reduce the symptoms.
Varicose and therad veins affect men and woman of all ages

Varicose veins and other vein conditions can affect men and women of all ages. Heredity is a strong factor in their development. If both your parents have varicose veins then you have an 80% chance of developing them yourself. Problems with the valves probably start in the teenage years and then if the veins are put under a strain (with prolonged standing, weight gain or pregnancy for example), the valves give way completely and the veins start bulging and become varicose.
Prevention

Here are some ways you can try to prevent varicose veins:

  • Walk around as much as you can – don’t sit or stand in one place for long periods of time.
  • To help the blood to flow easily, don’t cross your legs when sitting
  • Don't sleep sitting in a chair
  • Get up and stretch when on long journeys such as on a coach or plane.
  • Graduated compression stockings promote the flow of blood in the deep veins of the legs. If you are diabetic or suffer with artery problems you should speak to your GP or pharmacist for advice.
  • Watch your weight.
  • Make sure you have a healthy diet, with enough fibre, to avoid constipation.
  • Elevate (lift up) your legs if you have been standing still for a long time to allow the blood in the veins to empty.
  • Don’t wear tight underwear or clothes.
  • Keep active by taking regular exercise.
  • Stop smoking.
  • Pregnancy is a time when varicose veins may develop and you should consider wearing graduated compression hosiery
