One of the commonest questions I get asked by people who are having varicose vein treatment is “When can I start my exercise program?”
Walking really is the best exercise to perform after any form of varicose vein treatment or varicose vein surgery. It works the foot pump the calf pump and the thigh pump and it promotes the flow of blood in the veins from the leg back to the heart. And it also promotes the healing process. You really can’t do too much walking. Do as much as you can as early as you want.
With regard to running it can be quite uncomfortable in the early stages so you might want to leave it a few days. You can go back to the gym as soon as you like. Low impact activities such as walking on a treadmill are absolutely fine and very good for the healing process. You can also work your upper body with some gentle exercises such as rowing or some resistance work for your upper body. Cycling is also a good low impact activity which is good for the leg circulation and which will promote the healing process.
With regard to swimming I would suggest you leave it at least 2 weeks before getting into a public swimming pool. The water does have a lot of chlorine and is not the same as running water under a shower. In fact you can have a shower as early as 48 hours after your vein treatments. That’s my advice about exercising after a varicose vein surgery and varicose vein treatments.
