Microsclerotherapy

Also known as just "Sclerotherapy"

In the absence of varicose veins or superficial venous reflux, an injection technique called “Microsclerotherapy” is used to treat the thread veins directly. A prescription called a sclerosant is injected through a very fine needle directly into the vein. The sclerosant gently removes the delicate lining of the vein (the endothelium) and starts a healing process in which the spider vein is gradually absorbed and dispersed.

Treatment of leg thread veins takes time. Typically 3 treatment sessions of Microsclerotherapy are needed with an interval of 6 to 12 weeks between each session and then there is a healing process during which the thread veins fade. After 3 treatment sessions approximately 9 out of 10 people are pleased or very pleased with the improvement.

Micro-sclerotherapy

Over a period of time the treated blood vessel is absorbed by the body and eventually disperses. Microsclerotherapy is very effective – after three treatments an 80-90% improvement can be expected. In this photograph, you can see that a very fine needle is used to directly with the sclerosant solution.

Successful injection results in the clear medication displacing the blood within the vessel. It looks as if the spider vein has disappeared instantly. It hasn’t . The fading and improvement in the appearance of the veins takes several weeks. In initially, the spider veins may actually look worse but don’t be alarmed, approximately 6 weeks after the treatment, you should see significant improvement.

Veinlite and Feeder Veins

The “feeding” veins that supply blood to to the thread veins can be several centimetres away and are usually invisible. The specialists at The VeinCare Centre use the Veinlite® system to identify the reticular veins for treatment. A high energy halogen light beam is focused into the deeper part of the skin, allowing the feeder veins to be easily identified and injected.
